We are seeking Assistant Teachers for our RealArts Afterschool Program to start in September 2018. Our Afterschool program is part of the Visual and Performing Arts Department which integrates art performance and art education into our programs serving thousands of New Yorkers in need. Our RealArts Afterschool program offers age-appropriate arts education including theater arts, music, visual arts, and dance to 45 children. In addition to the arts, RealArts Afterschool activities include aquatics, recreational and cultural activities, and field trips. The program is offered Monday through Friday, 3:00 – 6:00 pm from September through June. We also provide full-day programming during some days that New York City Schools are closed.

This is an exciting position for someone who is passionate about working with school aged children in a program emphasizing arts education. S/he will be responsible for supervising children ages 5 – 10 in a variety of group arts and recreational activities. Assistant Teachers will work with a creative team of experienced Teaching Artists and must be caring, responsible and attentive. Assistant Teachers will be in charge of picking children up from local public schools, serving snack, creating and implementing games and activities, chaperoning fieldtrips, assisting Teaching Artists in the classroom, and escorting children to scheduled programming, including arts classes and on-site swimming.

Qualifications: Assistant Teachers will be responsible, have exceptional judgement and possess excellent communication skills. They will have experience working on a team and will have a minimum of 1 year of experience working with school-aged children. Applicants must be energetic and enthusiastic about working with children. A Bachelor’s Degree is required. Experience/ interest in arts-based programming preferred. The hours are 20 hours/week – from 2pm to 6pm, with occasional additional hours.
