Art Handler- Departmental Technician
Metropolitan Museum of Art


The Departmental Technician is the caretaker of the Egyptian Art department’s collection and works in coordination with the Collections Manager and curatorial staff to safeguard the collection on view, in storage, and in transit. Hours are 8AM to 4PM.
Primary Responsibilities and Duties:
Safe handling and transportation of works of art and other materials within the museum
Caring for the collections in galleries, storage, and exhibition, including the upkeep of the art, the appearance and cleanliness of galleries, display furniture, and all storage environments
Responsible for handling and display of art in the galleries, storage, study, conservation, photography, and installation and deinstallation of special exhibitions and displays including works on paper and textiles
Safeguarding art during events in the Temple of Dendur gallery

Requirements and Qualifications:
Experience and Skills:
Minimum of three years experience in the care and handling of artwork, three-dimensional in particular, in a museum, gallery, or professional art studio preferred
Meticulous attention to detail in the care and handling of art objects and the recording of collection information required
Proactive attention to maintenance of gallery and artworks required
Ability to adapt to multiple projects with shifting priorities, to work independently and in cooperation/coordination with all levels of MMA staff, and to follow directions as required
Ability to lift heavy objects is occasionally required
Knowledge and Education:
College degree preferred; museum studies, conservation, or fine art studies a plus
General knowledge of office computer software
General knowledge of computer databases and digital cameras preferred
